Track 2 on Reflecting rooms
time machine is a very atmospheric and self-aware track that doesn't exactly have a specific story, but rather a bunch of different stories morphed into one big song that generally describes how i can feel when i'm overwhelmed and want to disappear....but CAN'T!
metaphorically, it's about reversing time to be able to get out of something that's very stressful.
so, i wrote time machine in december the day after my birthday last year (extreme shocker) because i'd been thinking about how overwhelming it is to be the center of attention from multiple people in a small room. yk, i feel like Reflecting rooms should've been called Small rooms.... i know, i know...."why are you so uncomfy being the talk of the townroom if you want to be a successful musician?" idk myself and i don't think it has to make sense to anyone but myself OKAY? i just never liked it. period dot com
anyway back to being serious CALM DOWN @jae ...
i forgot about the song until early february, which is when i recorded five songs in one night — the titles of these songs being standby, loser of the year, new page, amazing and ofc, time machine.
as you can see in the picture above, the lyrics i wrote cut off where the chorus begins and there's not really a verse, so i didn't really have anything to work with ........... but i'm literally jaedan isaiah.
i took a loop that i found in a free sample pack i'd downloaded (which i unfortunately do not remember the name of because i backed up my data from this time to iCloud drive in a ZIP </3) and placed it down into logic, but um...yk...i didn't know what to do beyond this point! it was like 2am.
so i did what i did best, and started freestyling before recording. FYI!!!! i do not mumble / do melody pass demos when i decide to come up with new songs on the spot, it just naturally happens and it's been like that since 2012 lol. so then i got down to business, writing whatever was in my head IMMEDIATELY and i actually gagged myself because i didn't think i'd write something like "and i hate this party / i'm ready to go / 'cause i feel like an alien / so so bad" which i know is not GroundBreaking Ltd lyrics but like......cmon.....it's pretty good when you look at my past lyrics lol.
with that, i started to record more and more into the song, getting over to the chorus and then the second verse, which i think is the better verse in the song tbh. YEP! it's insistent on the whole disappearing thing, but it also touches on my extreme maladaptive daydreaming that i Love to do because i used to believe in reality shifting—fuck you, shifttok—it's a nice lil escape...But per usual i have to return to the real world and keep going. luv dattt! 😍😍
anyway my FAVORITE part of the song overall is how much i do little runs — CAN YOU GUYS BELIEVE I CAN RIFF AND RUN ???!!?!?!?@?@?@?@?@ i couldn't do that in 2024 or 2025! not even 2022!!!!! and i was rly gonna spend hundreds on vocal training..ok. but yes i really put my entire runussy into this project its very funny. i think as well as What a nice life, it's a song that has minimal backing vocals. kinda metaphorical for being super in my head, just me and my thoughts alone. the drums are also kinda calmed down (and y'all i HATE how i mastered this song, the distortion towards the end greatly pisses me off but i cannot jeopardize the transitions so we'll just say the distortion at the end is a metaphor for a knocking door outside of my head PLEASE)
soo..yeah. the song isn't really too deep which results in a bit of a shorter breakdown, but it's a very real song i'd hope a lot of people can relate to. many people have this feeling of seeking an escape, it really sucks because when you hate being in a space you're uncomfortable with, that feeling seems to intensify itself especially if you can't easily just get up and go. thus....a time machine is needed.
