Track 1 on Reflecting rooms
back in October after i saw Lorde at MSG, i vowed to create a project as real and honest as her album Virgin. changed my entire summer, but it wasn't until i went to her concert that i felt truly moved. initially i envisioned this project to be some extravagant project with #PROMOTION and #CRAZYSHT but over time i just lost that will and wanted it to be something lowkey that i can always promote at a later time, which eventually lead to Reflecting rooms.
this song, What a nice life, was created towards the ending of October using just the microphone of my MacBook microphone. it was the fourth song specifically created for this project over the month very ghetto demo, but it kept me satisfied for a couple of months anyway!!!
idk how to embed the audio player here y'all bare with me :( Download demo
as you can tell....it's not the best...lol.....but it gave me a general idea over what i needed to do when i finally recorded it with my Actual microphone :3 the infamous PD-70!
anywho, the lyrics really have to do with me not being able to get over my situationship (FROM 2024 BTW.....) and the struggles of fighting the urge to text him to tell him how much i miss him for some reason. fun fact! i'd been seeing him a lotttttt on dating apps around the time that i wrote this song, at least three of them. i ghosted him in the summer of '24 because he wasn't texting me back (but i just forgot to give him my new number so he probably thought it was a scammer or sum) and i'd also been dealing with the guilt of not texting him frequently which prolonged our development at all. SO! when i kept going through the motions and tried pursuing other guys and nothing worked out, my mind kept going back to him because we had just two dates together and he was very nice.
yeah! that's basically a backstory on the first verse.
the chorus is also very dramatic, basically just taking all of that and putting it into some sad and moody tumblr quote like "NOBODY GETS ME LIKE HE DID I NEED HIM" and um...............it works! even though it's corny as hell, it works very well in the song. i hope.
the second verse is kinda like a realization of how i sound while still staying in that pit of helplessness over the nonexistent wall between me and this dood. i mean he's literally an instagram dm away but yk? unexpected. it kindaaaaa explains how and why i get so obsessive over things like this but its kinda vague so u just have to get it cuz i cant go into detail #SRY
the composition itself is my favorite part of the song though, it's my first time diving into a jazzy kind of sound for a song and i honestly wish i could do more because i LOVE JAZZ and i love to sing in a jazzy style. i also played my guitar as a bass!!!! i've been really doing my big one playing my guitar more often on my music (i strummed on podcast but that's for another blog post ofc) anddddd of course i played the peens (piano, you PERVERTS) and made it sound very layered with electronic sounds per usual. very nu-jazz, i wish there was a term to describe jazz with many experimental and electronic elements but i guess nu-jazz is the proper term anyway SO!
and of course, we can't forget about the doubled vocal mixing, it's my favorite kind of vocal mixing because in the 90s, every song would SPAM the doubled vocal effects with a bit of room verb and it just sounded absolutely heavenly. love it.
this song has always been one i knew i'd never scrap, regardless of How it was released - i just really wanted it to be out. and it is! and i hope everyone has been enjoying it as much as i enjoyed making it <3
